World Imagination Day
In March 2011, I was invited to FABRICA, the Benetton Design Research Centre in Treviso, Italy. During the two-week trial evaluation, one of the assignments I was given was to invent an international day of my choosing. Inspired by the United Nations slogan "It's You're World," I designed the first ever World Imagination Day.

Creative thinking was behind every great innovation. From the lightbulb to the airplane, our imaginations shape the world. On March 14th, the birthday of Albert Einstein, we honor creative achievements by celebrating World Imagination Day. The dymaxion identity used throughout the campaign is a nod to the greater innovator Buckminster Fuller, and an invitation to imagine new scenarios of your own.

The future, after all, is up to your imagination.

Inspiration all year round! Each month contains a quote from some of my favorite creative people. The color spectrum matches with each coinciding month, and a series of lines build up in chronological order, symbolizing the build-up of anxiety from the start of a new year to its stressful end each December.

Information graphics have been assisting us in understanding data for thousands of years. It is only until recently that the aesthetic of infographics has shifted from the typical two dimensional bar graphs and pie charts to it’s varied atypical forms that are dominant in our visual culture. It seems increasingly necessary for intellectually challenging information to be accompanied by some visual representation of the corresponding data. Has the impact of the designed communiqué finally struck a note on news and media society? Is it the general assumption now that all human beings rely predominately on the right hemisphere of their brains to process information? Whether we identify as one or not, are we all fundamentally visual learners?

With the increasingly complex sets of data thrown at us today, we need some way of processing it all. Infographics have been the solution, but perhaps the overwhelming excess of graphic data has begun to blend together, making it more difficult to make the associations necessary in making the content effective. Am I required as a viewer to understand the message just because it has been visually spelled-out for me? My concern is that the message (i.e. content) is now captive to the graphic (i.e. the visual). Consider this revelation before you begin your next project and constantly examine the concept; what are you really trying to say?

Feast on This
Every year, IDEO welcomes us along with our loved ones to gorge and give thanks at a Thanksgiving feast and pie contest not to be missed. When the opportunity to create the poster for the 2011 event presented itself, I immediately started thinking sensorially. It just so happens that our photo studio on the IDEO Palo Alto campus is under the same roof as our food prototyping lab that we call “The Cutting Board.” Given the convenient disposal of these resources, paired with a peculiar craving for pie, I had no other choice than to make this poster look delicious!

(The letterforms of the voluptuous font, Gelato Script, was modified to create a more balanced composition.)

“Mask Appeal”
Every fall the San Francisco chapter of AIGA hosts a gala to celebrate a community of over 1,600 students and professionals in the Bay Area. Each gala has a theme that is most evidently expressed through the auctioning of custom-designed objects by design firms and independents. This year’s event was a masquerade, and appropriately titled “Mask Appeal.”

This is IDEO's contribution, a reinterpretation of an old game, designed by myself and Wilfred Castillo, with 3D construction by Nathan Whipple of the IDEO Prototyping team. Learn more about the process here.
